While taking a cruise has always been a fun way to travel, river cruises have gained popularity as a way to see the world without travelling across vast oceans. In many ways, river cruises are superior to ocean cruises, allowing passengers to explore the region’s attractions in greater detail. The cost of Ontario cruises could differ based on where you go.

Ontario Cruises To Opt For In 2023

There are many cruises you can consider for your 2023 vacation itinerary; a few of them are:

1. Kingston To Montreal And Return

Celebrate the arrival of spring and the unique history and natural beauty of the 1000 Islands and the St. Lawrence River on a 7-night/8-day cruise to start the river cruising season in 2023. The St. Lawrence Seaway lock system, which enables travel and trade to Montreal, will be explored on this journey from Kingston to Montreal. This Signature Cruise aims to showcase the best aspects of early spring on the St. Lawrence River.

2. Kingston To Upper Canada Village And Return

The Upper River Expedition is specifically designed for travelers who want to take in all the splendor and heritage of the Thousand Islands. Your vacation cruise will set sail from Kingston, Ontario, and take you through the Thousand Islands and on to Brockville and further east. The St. Lawrence Seaway’s first lock can be found at Iroquois, Ontario, as you cruise downstream past Prescott.

The St. Lawrence River’s Seaway Control Dam, which runs from the Canadian to the American side, controls the water depth in the Seaway to Montreal. As you head towards Morrisburg, Ontario, the “Lost Villages” of the Seaway are located on your route to Upper Canada Village past Iroquois.

3. Kingston To Quebec City

With the Canadian Empress as your vessel, relax and take in the sights of Upper Canada and the Thousand Islands as you cruise downriver in style and comfort. As you travel further east into Quebec, you’ll encounter a stark contrast between French and English Canadian culture. Your river cruise trip can start or end in Quebec City, Canada’s most famous city, and it will be a memorable experience either way. You can see and feel “Old” European grace and charm here.

There are many other cruise options that you can consider. For more information on our Ontario cruises, get in touch with The St. Lawrence Cruise Lines at 1-800-267-7868 or for additional details, contact us today.

The St. Lawrence River area has several fantastic summertime attractions, including castles, vineyards, lighthouses, and charming islands. The St. Lawrence Seaway is a massive project that includes a network of lakes, rivers, and locks stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the western tip of Lake Superior, a distance of 3,790 kilometres. Here are the top destinations to visit if you are planning a small ship cruising trip in the area.

Small Ship Cruising Options

  • An 80-kilometre stretch of the river from Kingston to Brockville is dotted by a scattering of sparsely vegetated islands known as the Thousand Islands. A cruise is the best way to view the islands; you can find them in most riverbank cities like Kingston. However, the ones departing from Gananoque are highly recommended.
  • Luxury vacation mansions in the Thousand Islands were famous among Hollywood’s A-list during the Gilded Age. Frederick Bourne, the Singer Sewing Machine Company’s president, constructed Singer Castle on Dark Island in 1905, and there are hidden passages, a dungeon, and tunnels beneath the surface. The charming Boldt Castle is the most visited.
  • While having your boat is convenient, it is not required for navigating the St. Lawrence River. You will find excellent small ship cruising options to visit the castles, Millionaire’s Row, or different lighthouses.
  • In the Thousand Islands, tenting and cottages are available, but Wellesley Island State Park has the most possibilities. It has remained unchanged from its idyllic Norman Rockwell days.
  • Clayton’s Antique Boat Museum has a fantastic collection of boats. The boat museum has the continent’s most extensive collection of historic watercraft. You can learn more about Guy Lombardo, known as the “The World’s Fastest Bandleader,” and you will find out more about his passion for racing in a building named “The Quest for Speed.”
  • The Handweaving Museum and facilities for weaving and ceramics are located in Clayton’s Thousand Island Arts Center. You can take a class if you want to. The National Register of Historic Places in Clayton, the famous Clayton Opera House, hosts a variety of musical and theatrical performances.
  • You can find several wineries in the St. Lawrence Valley. Alexandria Bay is home to several distilleries like Dark Island Spirits and Clayton Distillery. The hops and barley used by the Wood Boat Brewery here are grown in the state. A local Massena business, Kanab Orchards, makes premium hard cider.

St Lawrence Cruise Lines offers a range of small ship cruising options, and you can also visit the Moses-Saunders Power Dam. For more details, please contact us.

The Robert Moses-Robert H. Saunders Power Dam, often known as the Moses-Saunders Power Dam, stands on the Saint Lawrence River that straddles the international boundary between Canada and the United States.

It is situated between New York, Massena, and Cornwall, ON. The dam provides water to the nearby St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project (912 MW) and R.H. Saunders Producing Station (1045 MW) hydroelectric power generating units.

The Purpose Of The Moses-Saunders Power Dam

The Moses-Saunders Power Dam fulfilled several functions, including those listed below.

1. Hydroelectricity And Commercial Navigation

While these were the direct objectives, after high water levels in Lake Ontario in the 1940s and early 1950s, mitigating the consequences of floods and the development’s effects on towns along the St. Lawrence River were also crucial.

2. The Lake St. Lawrence Reservoir

As a result of the construction of Moses-Saunders Dam, a vast region directly upstream of the structure was flooded to form Lake St. Lawrence, the dam’s reservoir.

3. A Deeper, Wider River

The St. Lawrence Seaway project needed channel enlargements, dredging, and the creation of different channels across islands, in addition to building the canals and locks we see today. This made it possible for bigger vessels to navigate the Saint Lawrence River between the Atlantic Ocean and Great Lakes.

4. Protection From High Water Levels

The canal enlargements also made it possible to release more water from Lake Ontario than was technically feasible before the project. This crucial feature of the project offers more protection from Lake Ontario’s high waters than was previously achievable.

Lake Ontario’s discharge control is governed by agreements between Canada and the United States.

The natural routing of the Ottawa River from the neck of the Island of Montreal towards Ottawa City, a distance of almost 100 miles, is interrupted between the thirteen-mile-apart villages of Carillon and Grenville by Carillon, Chûte à Blondeau, and the Longue Sault Rapids in that sequence from east to west, connected by the Carillon Lock.

History Of The Carillon Lock

At Hawkesbury, the three short Ottawa River Canals circumvented the Ottawa River’s 21 km (13 km) long Long Sault rapids. In 1819, Lt. Col. Henry Du Vernet ( a British Army engineer) began the Grenville Canal construction project, a 9.6-kilometer-long (6-mile-long) waterway with seven locks. In 1826, construction began on the Chute-à-Blondeau canals, measuring 0.25 miles in length with one lock, and Carillon, measuring 3.2 miles in length with three locks. All were operational by 1834 and could handle boats with 1.8 m (6 foot) draughts.

Hydro-Quebec constructed a large dam at Carillon between 1959 and 1963, which flooded locks and canals at Grenville. However, a new lock built at the time of dam building at Carillon and still in use for recreational traffic today permits a 19-meter drop (62 ft.).

The Uniqueness of Carillon Lock

The site has many distinctive features such as:

  • The Carillon lock is distinctive because it raises vessels 20 m on the Carillon Canal. A 200-ton lift gate is used to open and close the lock.
  • Next to the lock is a massive hydroelectric power facility.
  • Several historical components, such as the remnants of lock No. 1, remain on the canal’s banks.
  • The combined locks serve as the river’s lower entrance to the initial canal.
  • The canal path leads to the existing lock, a portion whose shape and stonewall on the south are connected with the old second canal.

St Lawrence Cruise Lines offers a range of superb cruise options, including the Carillion Lock, and you can also visit the impressive Carillon Canal. If you’d like to see the best of the St. Lawrence River, cruise with us. We are the most experienced cruise operator in the region.

Small Ship Operator Expands 2023 Schedule Due to Growing Demand for River Cruising

August 8, 2022

Kingston, ON: Due to an increasing demand for North American river cruising, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines has officially sold out all 2022 cruises and is now booking passengers for 2023. The strong demand was initially fueled by the decision of many Canadian and American travellers to plan their travel close to home and abstain from international travel during the most recent stages of the pandemic.

In response to the growing demand for North American river cruising, the Canadian-based small ship operator has extended its 2023 season and added an additional cruise to accommodate travellers. The Seaway Discovery Cruise is a 7 night, 8 day cruise that will run from August 19-26, 2023 from Kingston to Montreal and Return, with a unique itinerary will focus on the historic ports and locks of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Another factor that is impacting consumer demand is a growing recognition of the benefits of small ship cruising, and the ability of smaller cruise vessels to offer a more private, intimate experience with a focus on safety, comfort and relaxation.

“We are hearing from many of our passengers that they are taking a fresh look at small ship cruising to avoid large crowds and they appreciate our ability and willingness to maintain health and safety measures during the most recent stages of the pandemic.”
– Jason Clark, President of St. Lawrence Cruise Lines.

During the 2022 season, all passengers and crew are required to be vaccinated and receive an antigen rapid-test prior to boarding the vessel. Additional COVID-19 safety measures continue to be in effect for most aspects of the cruise vacation experience, including physical distancing and a ship-wide disinfectant regime.

The cruise line operates a single vessel, the CANADIAN EMPRESS, which features 32 staterooms with twin fixed beds, private bathrooms, and access to fresh air and a view of the river. Bookings for the 2023 season are underway and travellers may call 1-800-267-7868 for booking availability or to request a free travel brochure. Information on the cruise schedule, itineraries, and safety measures is also available at www.StLawrenceCruiseLines.com.

Cumberland Heritage Village got its name from Cumberland, initially formed as a town in Russell County in 1800. It was named in honour of the Duke of Cumberland (and, after that, the King of Hanover). The township was separated from Russell County and integrated into the newly created Ottawa–Carleton Regional Municipality in 1969 when the upper-tier regional government was established to replace neighbouring Carleton County.

In 1999, nearly two centuries after its incorporation, Cumberland became a city. In 2001, however, the municipality and all the other member municipalities of the Ottawa–Carleton Regional Municipality (including the city of Ottawa) were merged to form a single municipality — the new City of Ottawa.

Cumberland Heritage Village Today

Cumberland is currently a part of Ottawa. The majority of the old municipality now comprises Cumberland Ward, represented on the Ottawa City Council. The majority of the suburban neighbourhood of Orléans, which spread across the historical line between Cumberland and Gloucester city, has been separated from Cumberland and Gloucester. It is now incorporated into the Orléans and Innes Wards.

Thus, Cumberland Ward has become predominately rural, consisting of ancient settlements that are Ottawa’s bedroom neighbourhoods. The early builders of Cumberland took great care in their work, as today’s well-ordered village of comfortable houses, flowers, and welcoming people is situated at the base of towering, snow-capped island mountains.

Cumberland Heritage Village: An Ideal Municipality

Since the closure of the local coal mines and consequent shift in land use regulations, Cumberland has demonstrated a tendency to advance gradually. New various clean-up bylaws, as well as the pride of ownership, are showing a positive impact on dwellings across the municipality.

St Lawrence Cruise Lines offers a range of superb cruise options. Make sure to check out all cruises available, including the cruise that visits Cumberland. For any questions or more details, please contact us.

Vaccination Requirements and Safety Measures a Resounding Success

October 25, 2021

Kingston, ON: St. Lawrence Cruise Lines has successfully completed their 2021 cruise season, and their passengers have responded with strong reviews, with 93% of passenger evaluations indicating a willingness to cruise with them again. The cruise line ran overnight cruises on the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, with no incidences of Covid-19 reported over the season. The decision to resume operations was incited by strong consumer demand from cruise enthusiasts who were eager to resume travel.

During the season, all passengers and crew were required to be vaccinated, as well as tested prior to boarding the vessel. Additional COVID-19 safety measures were in full effect in all aspects of the cruise vacation experience, including physical distancing, mask protocols, and a ship-wide disinfectant regime.

“We believe that the safe and successful completion of our 2021 season proves that we can deliver a fulfilling cruise vacation with the highest levels of hospitality while maintaining equally high standards of COVID-19 safety measures for everyone on board,” said Jason Clark, President of St. Lawrence Cruise Lines.

The cruise line operates a single vessel, the CANADIAN EMPRESS, which features 32 staterooms with twin fixed beds, private bathrooms, and access to fresh air and a view of the river. Clark cited that one of the highlights of the 2021 season was the 40th Anniversary celebration of the christening of the ship in 1981.

“Despite the challenges that we have all faced in the last year, it was wonderful to recognize the longevity of our company and the ongoing contributions to our success from passengers and crew, both past and present.”
