LOCKS, LOCKS AND MORE LOCKS!
Canadian Cruise Line Offers Cruise that transits 9 locks

Kingston, Ontario - St. Lawrence Cruise Lines Inc., of Kingston, Ontario, Canada offers 3,5 and 6 night cruises aboard the elegant replica steamboat M/V Canadian Empress. This 66-passenger vessel transits the locks of the International Seaway and, on cruises to the nation's Capital (Ottawa), transits the locks of the Ottawa river.

"Along the St. Lawrence river between Kingston, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec, (a distance of 182 miles), the water drops approximately 226 feet", points out Bob Clark, President of the cruise line. "In this distance, the Canadian Empress transits 7 locks, 5 of which are Canadian and 2 of which are operated by the United States."

"It's very exciting for the guests to pass through these enormous locks" says Walt Gargaro, senior Purser. The locks of the Seaway are all similar in size. In width they are 80 feet; and the length is 766 feet. Mr. Gargaro notes, "Some of the locks have a lift of approximately 45 feet and it is absolutely amazing to watch giant 'freighters' being lifted that high within the space of approximately 30 minutes!"

On trips which include Ottawa, Ontario; the Canadian Empress transits the Ste. Anne de Bellevue and Carillon locks. "The Carillon lock is clearly the most spectacular", says Bob Clark. "While it is not the largest compared to the Seaway locks, it does have a lift of 65 feet". "A boat entering the chamber of the lock is raised or lowered within 20 minutes, which in former times, would have required 10 locks".

"If travellers wish to experience the thrill of 'locking through', it's certainly not necessary to travel all the way to Panama" says Clark. "We have it right here in North America, and this is definitely the year to travel in Canada". Americans and Canadians choosing to vacation in Canada this year are guaranteed to receive excellent value for their holiday money.

St. Lawrence Cruise Lines is a Canadian-based calm-water cruising company which offers 5 different overnight cruise options of 3,5 and 6 night durations during the months of May through October. The cruises are profoundly rich in history and include numerous regularly scheduled events including visits to mansions, museums, forts, historic villages, and a city tour of Montreal.
